The submissions are defintly picking up, I’m seeing more submissions than before. Why? I attribute this to the start of the new year when many folks change up jobs, and the slight uptick we’re starting to see in the economy.

In an effort to recognize the changes in the social media space, I’ve started this post series (see archives) to both track and congratulate folks who get promoted, move, or accept new exciting positions. Please help me congratulate the following folks:

• Congrats to Jeannette Gibson (Twttier) who has moved to corporate marketing to run social media at Cisco Systems. I’ve shared the stage with her a few times, she’s quite impressive, and has been successful in deploying social programs in B2B environments.
• Congrats to Maria Povermo (Twitter) who’s ascended to the Group Manager, Social Media at Adobe Systems, (Altimeter client)
• Dave Armon has joined Context Optional as director of strategic accounts.
• Zena Weist (Twitter) has landed at HRBLock as the director of social media, congrats.
• Ginevra Kirkland, long term customer advocate at Six Apart (I had the joy of working with her years ago as a client) has now joined the mighty team at Get Satisfaction as a Community and Account Manager read her post, as well as read the interview on Gsat blog.
• Joe Stanhope joins Forrester Research (great folks) as a Senior Analyst focused on site optimization strategy, which includes coverage of Web analytics as well as online testing and targeting platforms.
• WPP owned agency Ogilvy PR hired Dirk Shaw as a senior vice president in its 360° Digital Influence Practice. I’ve worked closely with Dirk in the past and have been impressed, congrats Dirk and Ogilvy.
• Todd Bowman has joined (PDF) Senior Vice President of Sales at appssavvy
• Joel Johnson is now a SVP Integrated Planning Director at Porter Novelli
• Marc-Antoine Ross is the Community & Content Manager at SoftCity Technologies
• Matt Dickman has been promoted to SVP, Digital Strategy at Fleishman-Hillard
• Carey Sullivan has been promoted to Manager of Social Media American Electric Power
• Angela Connor is a new hire as Social Media Manager at Capstrat
• Chris WIlson has joined as a Senior Account Executive, Digital Strategy at Fleishman-Hillard
• Michael Litman joins as a Social Media Planner at Dare Digital
• Andrew D. Nystrom is a new hire as Digital Marketing Manager, Social Media at Red Bull North America #wings

From an industry perspective there were significantly more hires this month, than last. This is due to two pieces: 1) It’s traditional for new roles to be filled during the new year, 2) An uptick in the overall financial space and a continued focus on the social and open web.

• Chris Messina who’s been a leader in the open web and standards joins Google, where he’ll be focused on leading the open web initiatives. I’m certainly going to be following his work regardless of where he goes.
• Joseph Smarr, via product team at Comcast’s Plaxo also joins Google, both of these gentleman have a focus on web standards and the ‘Openstack’ so it’ll be interesting to see how this unfold. I’ve been friends with Joseph for a few years now, and it’s great to see him continue to grow.
• BL Ochman, a force of great positive energy who I’ve known for over 5 years, has joined Proof Digital Media – the new digital marketing arm of Burson-Marsteller. She’ll report to Proof CEO Jay Leveton, and have been given the opportunity to help guide the agency into the forefront of new media agency.
• Johannes Neuer joins the The New York Public Library as the eCommunications Manager where he’ll expand and promote eCommunications and social media initiatives at The New York Public Library (both internally and externally).
• Kati Driscoll lands at AAA Mid-Atlantic as a Social Media Community Specialist Working within existing and emerging AAA Mid-Atlantic communities to engage members, providing information and conversation to help them receive the full benefit of their membership and our community.
• Karthik S joins Edelman as Head of Digital Strategy (India) Create and frame Edelman’s social media PR offerings in India, help clients integrate social media and digital communications within existing PR programs.
• Greg Meyer joins Gist Customer Experience Manager where he’ll be providing VIP Support, Building a Customer “Power Tips” channel, and generally doing whatever necessary to make users successful.
• Jennifer Polk has been promoted at Sears Holdings as the Director, BU Social Strategy Developing and leading community and social networking initiatives for SHC BUs, including building strategies and programs to help the BUs achieve greater customer engagement. She’ll be ensuring social programs align with BU business objectives and promoting partnership between Social Media, Online, Marketing and the BUs.
• Robert Lommers has been promoted at Rabobank as the online media specialist focused on social media, online media, mobile, webcare, and social networking.
• Joel Burslem is now with 1000watt Consulting as Associate of Social media marketing and strategy for the real estate industry.
• Shara Karasic has been hired at Appolicious as the Director of Social Strategy developing community engagement and managing social strategy.
• Judith A. Mod is at Social Gastronomy as a Principal where she’ll be focused on enabling organizations to leverage social media for marketing, customer relationships, operations, employee engagement, and partner management.
• Matthew Rosenhaft also joins Social Gastronomy as a Principal where he’ll enable organizations to leverage social media for marketing, customer relationships, operations, employee engagement, and partner management.
• April M. Williams is now with Cyberlife Tutors as the President of Coaching: focused on career and social media
• Eileen O’Brien joins Siren Interactive as the Director, Search & Innovation at a social media lead for agency’ clients.
• Paul Miser has been promoted at VML Senior Social Marketing Strategist where he’ll be creating dynamic Social and Mobile strategies for VML clients as they tie in with their digital and interactive strategies.
• Kurt Abrahamson joins SocialMedia.com as the CEO, Leading the SocialMedia.com team to deliver our new social advertising platform for publishers.
• Heather Strout joins the Farland Group as a Director of Community Services, there Heather will be helping companies discover ways to establish and sustain customer communities. She comes from a great family, her brother Aaron is a friend and constituent.
• Ari Lightman has a teaching appointment at Carnegie Mellon University as an Adjunct Professor teaching a case study class on measurement and analysis of social media initiatives.

• Additionally, Lisa Wilberding also joins Hanson, Inc as the Midwest Social Engagement & Messaging Strategist where she will define, plan and execute long-term Social Engagement solutions for clients, as well as create messaging for web sites and interactive communications.
• Dan Kidd is hired at community platform vendor Neighborhood America as a Senior Director, CPG, Custom Research where he’ll be focused on Social Media Campaign Analytics.

• MySpace is finally filling its executive board after ushering out nearly the entire leadership team at troubled social network. They’ve recruited an experienced team to turn the ship around starting with Nada Stirratt has joined MySpace in the role of Chief Revenue Officer, Dustin Finer has come on board as MySpace’s Chief People Officer, Ali Partovi, former CEO of iLike, will serve as Senior Vice President of Business Development based in San Francisco, Hadi Partovi, former president of iLike, will serve as Senior Vice President of Technology based in Seattle. • Adam Nash, has been internally promoted at LinkedIn as the Vice President, Search & Platform Products at LinkedIn. We recently spoke, and he emphasized LinkedIn’s commitment to his space, hence crafting his role. I’ll be watching this area of opportunity closely, congrats Adam.
• Vanina Delobelle left Monster and is now working for Sears Holdings Corporation in Chicago. As I a manager of e-commerce Product Management, Vanina will build a social commerce solution.
• Microsoft gets serious about Social Computing and launches the Future Social Experiences (FUSE) Labs, a new group led by general manager Lili Cheng that will focus on software and services that are centered on social connectivity, real-time experiences, and rich media.
• Sheila Scarborough launches new social venture in her role with a focus on social and tourism, her blog captures her hard work, get some sleep already!
• James Whatley @whatleydude left his role as Head of Digital, Social Media for SpinVox at the end of August and has taken up a position as Director of Engagement Strategy at WOM Agency, 1000heads.
• Bob Bahramipour joins InXpo a virtual events company, as CMO to oversee all aspects of marketing, including advertising, brand awareness and product marketing, to further drive adoption for the company’s virtual solutions. This also includes social media and how to incorporate this further into our platform. I’ve met Bob in person, and recognize his talents, I expect to see good things spring from his fresh perspective.
• John Hegstrom is a new VP of Client Services also at InXpo a virtual events company. His goal is to ensure that customers successfully reach their target audiences, deliver their messages effectively, and build engaging and collaborative virtual environments.

• Passenger, what I call an ‘insight community vendor’ that fosters communities for brands that want to better understand their customers has named Michael Winner as SVP of Technology. He hails from Blink Logic as the CTO, and will spearhead product dev, QA and IT.
• Congrats to Christpher Lynch, who did excellent reporting at CIO.com with a strong focus on micoblogging and other web topics. His interest in the topic has landed him at SocialText, a company that provides social and enterprise here in Palo Alto. He’ll be involved with marketing and will utilize his skills and background from mainstream media, I’ll be watching for the launch of his new blog @cglynch
• MindTouch has filled it’s Community Manager/Customer Advocate Role. We are excited to have Katherine Smith (LinkedIn Profile) join from HL2. At HL2, she was Director of Marketing Strategy for Microsoft clients and created the social marketing strategy for SharePoint Social Computing.

• Stacy E. Lukasavitz becomes the Interactive Marketing Coordinator with the Detroit Regional Chamber
• Online community expert Dawn Foster joins Olliance Group as Senior Executive and Practice Manager of a new Online Community PracticeJacob  Morgan(@jacobm) started a social media consultancy Mighty Mouth Media with 2 partners Connie Chan (@connieincalgary) and Roger Kondrat (@roger).Six Apart’s David Recordon joins Facebook as Director of Corporate Development, which suggests that Facebook will continue to open up.
• Fleishman-Hillard hired Jessica Smith as a VP in its Sacramento office, who will help build out the agency’s digital strategy on the West Coast, as well as be an agency resource nationwide. She will also support the firm’s FH Moms practice, which launched earlier this year.
• Michael Rubin joins Empower MediaMarketing of Cincinnati, OH as the Social Marketing Manager.
• Dan Thornton Joins Absolute Radio as the Digital Marketing Manager to further drive our successful community strategy and website.
• Deborah Schultz, Ray Wang, and myself join Charlene Li at the Altimeter Group.  It tickles me to self-submit my own move.

Stepahnie Agresta joins Porter Novelli as the EVP and Global Director of Digital Strategy and Social Media. Big congrats, and glad she made her blog post about the topic ‘human‘. I’ve known her for a few years now, and am happy to congratulate such a warm, intelligent, and fantastic professional to such a key role. Wishing her the best.

This one is a shocker, Steve Bendt who lead some of the innovative social media efforts at retailer Best Buy has decided to join Microsoft, (Catholic guilt and all) his new title will be Social Media Marketing Manager on the Windows team. He’ll be starting in Redmond in early July and I’m sure they’re glad to have such an innovative professional.

The Super Rewards team is happy to announce that Julie Craft, has recently joined the team as the Vice President of Marketing and Publisher Relations.

I can’t say enough good things about Adam Singer, who is a talented electronica muscian (I’m a fan of his) has decided to TopRank as an Account Manager to serve clients. Congrats on Top Rank who hired a very creative professional that will take them to the next level. Adam be sure to keep up the music!

Ripple 6 makes two key hires with Paul DePinto assumes the position of Vice President of Sales East.and Mike Tracy was promoted to Vice President of Sales West.

Anthony Cerreta is the Lead Interactive Producer for matrixx. Their recent projects include campaigns for Johnsonville, Schlotzsky’s, and Dippin’ Dots Facebook Fan Page, find him on Twitter, and his blog.

InfoGroup hired Bryan Jennewein is now Director of Social Media, find him on LinkedIn too.

Jonathan Georger joined the PR Agency, Backbone Media, as Online Brand Manager. congrats

Jamie Beckland, who began at White Horse as a project manager in September 2008, has been promoted and has accepted the position of Emerging Media Specialist

I will be responsible for marketing which will include social media and public relations.

Robert Scoble of Fast Company has decided to ship off and sail at a new venture, which he hasn’t announced yet. I had dinner with him last night, and it’s interesting what he’ll be doing next –more news soon.

Holly Canter is quitting her full time job as a financial advisor and taking on clients as a full time blogger and writer-for-hire. She currently writes for nashvogue, biatchionline, slidemagnet. She’s married to Mitch, my designer.

Amber Lambke (@amber_rae) is heading out to SF from the windy city and Zocalo Group to lead marketing for Leverage Software. She makes the announcement on her blog, congrats.

Sri Vikas, joined as the Brand Manager at BODYFUELZ – produce and market sports and performance nutrition products based on amino nutrition.

Rick Mahn, will be joining Land O’Lakes in Minneapolis this month as their Social Media Strategist. He’ll be working to bring social media ideals inside the company in addition to building their online strategy in social media.

He was recently interviewed by CMS wire

David B Thomas has started at the start of this year as the social media manager for SAS, the business analytics software company. He will be devoted full time to social media and primarily inward-focused on developing our strategy but also focused outwardly, helping departments at SAS use social media for outreach. Chris Allison just got hired as a blogger for NeboWeb interactive marketing agency, and will be working on web projects on behalf of the agency.

Natalie Villalobos (Twitter) is now the Signtific Community Manager, before she was at Digg and Yahoo! as Assistant Community Manager. She has a B.A. in History from Sonoma State University which was completed abroad at the University of Hull in England.

CEO of LinkedIn Dan Nye moves on from his position, it’s unclear who the permanent CEO will be, but apparently Reid Hoffman, investor will guide the strategy, and with interim CEO Jeff Wiener

David Lapter Appointed as CFO and Tom Gaffney to Lead Customer Success Division at KickApps, a Community Platform company.

Jesse Pickard promoted to Social Media Specialist at Razorfish at our New York office, Also, he co-wrote the Portable Social Graphs – Imagining their Potential deck with Shiv.

Bunchball, the creator of the consumer engagement and interaction platform “Nitro,” has announced the appointment of former Yahoo! Chief of Insights, Peter Daboll as CEO.

Visible Technologies hires Geoff Farris as senior vice president of sales. The Seattle-based company said Farris will lead its direct and indirect sales.

Natalie Lent is now the Director of Emerging Platforms at ID, and will helps ID’s clients with projects and programs using social and digital media.

Geoff Merrick joins Ripple6 in the new position of VP of Professional Services coming from Buzzhub. Ripple6 is growing & seeking others in the NYC learn more from their careers page.

Kris Hoet switches jobs within Microsoft and is now the Digital Media Communications Manager for all Windows Consumer brands – PC, mobile and online – as well as MSN and Live Search in EMEA.

MySpace Music to name Courtney Holt, a former MTV executive chief next week, this spells out a greater focus on media for MySpace rather than pure networking.

Dave Giusti joins Freepath in September as the myFreepath Community Manager. myFreepath is a network of people who exchange content (videos, audio, documents…you name it) through playlists created in Freepath.

David Gillespie is now a digital strategist currently in Melbourne, Australia but relocating early January to Toronto, Ontario! He writes Creative Is Not A Department which has been named one of the top 50 marketing blogs in Australia and also one of the top 15 business blogs. I’m already building up my net work on the ground there through Twitter but every little bit helps!

Marc Smith, formerly Senior Sociologist Researcher on Microsoft’s R&D team, has joined Telligent as Chief Social Scientist. I can’t wait to meet you and talk shop, congrats Marc and team.

Aaron Strout leaves Mzinga and joins Powered to be head of marketing of this social commerce platform. Looking at their website, it sounds like I’ll be in constant contact with him as they have prominantly featured Jupiter and Forrester reports on their homepage.

Todd Vanhoosear has moved from the PR world to take a job as senior analyst and director of client services at SocialSphere Networks.

Dave Knox has officially started a new role at P&G as the Digital Brand Strategist is what I use externally, this is a pretty big move as I’m hearing that P&G is starting to do more and more with social media. Also, Dave has the coveted first place slot in our fantasy football league –but I’m just a few yards behind him.

Congrats to Samantha Skey who has joined passenger as senior vice president of business development and general manager of Passenger’s eastern region.

I C.K. Sample III is now the Social Media Evangelist for Crowd Fusion.

Lauren Fisch took the Community Manager position at Slide and is focused on growing SuperPoke!

Although there have been some additional submissions, I’m seeking people that indicate in their blog posts they are working in the social media space –you need to clearly articulate that in comments or emails.
