Jeremiah Owyang discusses how web tools and social media enable companies to connect with customers

Web Strategy Show: Jason Baptiste on the Social Media Press Release

Although filmed a while ago, Jason Baptiste and I get together at Miami’s WeMedia conference, and discuss the future of the social press release. There are several PR firms that are adopting and implementing them, although there’s been some criticism about it. (Brian has a lengthy counter)

Upon further inspection, Brian Solis has a guide on the SMPR, but sadly, I don’t see a very clear one sentence definition.

I realy enjoy speaking with Jason from Publictivity, he’s clear, articulate and knowledgeable on his topic area, thanks for the patience on posting this video! I’m meeting with some potential folks who may publish my archived videos, stay tuned.

Not a fan of the social media press release, or any press release for that matter. Recognizing the need to provide accurate information to the press, couldn’t we just link to a backgrounder on a web site and not use all these dissemination services? Shouldn’t we just disseminate a Twitter, a Facebook message, or even an email saying: here’s the information for a story on XXX with a URL.

Francine, I’m with ya…but the SMR, in my opinion anyway, really isn’t limited to bloggers or journalists…to me, it’s about people.

    Here’s another take…

Francine, I’m with you too, and have been public with the tool.

I think Brian agrees and understands our point, the sad part is, that most of those who will implement it WONT understand the fundamental changes (conversations and control has shifted) and will think of it as a quick win.
