Corporations get “Social” at the Portland 2007 Internet Strategy Forum
Categories: Conference, Social MediaPosted on July 19th, 2007
I’m here at the Internet Strategy Forum, in Portland. I’m in the green room with the scobleizer, and can’t check out any of the speakers in the main hall as we’re interviewing folks. PodTech is a media partner of this conference, so we’re doing a bunch of videos. One of the great things about being in the back room interviewing folks is that many of the speakers are coming back here to be on the ScobleShow or Web Strategy Show, and it’s like our own private mini-conference (except that we get to grill them). We’ve had Erik Kokkonen from Cnet (Long term Cnet leader), Rey Ramsey (passionate speaker), Mike Moran (A distinguished IBM engineer and search marketing expert), Bryan Rhoads (who’s crafting Intel’s blogging strategy), Mary Alice Colvin (social media and collaboration consultant). Special thanks to Karamy Muessig of Xposure Unlimited who’s been coordinating all these interviews and even making sure we have food. It’s clear to me that many of the corporations are starting to adapt social media strategies, things are moving very quickly for this group. It’s fascinating, because I still meet a lot of companies (esp when I speak in the mid west or northern areas) that still don’t get it.
[I was pleasantly surprised to meet so many savvy corporations that get social media, conversations, transparency and authenticity...but now to watch them implement]
I’ll be linking to some of the live bloggers in the session:
Coverage of the Scoble keynote Here’s a detailed blow-by-blow of the sessions Scott had mixed feelings of the conference last year, but is glad that the uber blogger are here McClenahan Bruer Communications (McBru) wishes there were more bloggers here Great wrap up of Tim Kopp’s presentation Mike Moran recounts his presentation
Also, people are asking why I’m creating so many Facebook groups, the reason? It’s like the early days of the web, almost like a domain grab, and I recognize the ability to build communities is a great thing to start doing, it’s an extension of other tools and the growth is exponential.

Want more conference notes? I attend and speak at a lot of conferences, or check out all the tech events.

Isn’t social web only the next hype after web2.0 - or is it part of it?! I don’t know. But saving every thought, personal links, private exposures on the web isn’t realy the way I want the web to be.
Also, aren’t the people afraid of misues of their personal information they tell everyone who wants to know it?

Social Web has been around as long as chat rooms have been here. Some say that’s before the modern web as we know it was around.
“I don’t know. But saving every thought, personal links, private exposures on the web isn’t realy the way I want the web to be.”
The great thing about the web is you can make it and sort it they way you want. There are closed networks you can build, or you can simply not go to sites that share that type of info.
Security is an issue, privacy as well. This concern will grow over time, or society will be more used to it.
The next generation of workers are sharing their very very personal lives already –they’re native to it.
