Jeremiah Owyang discusses how web tools and social media enable companies to connect with customers

SF New Tech Meetup: Reviews of Truemors, Blabberize, Rateitall, AdPerk, JuggleMyStuff

I’m sitting in the front row of the SF New Tech meetup, sitting next to Brian Solis. Myles Weissleder is the founder and host and has been doing this for over 1 year.

Truemors by Guy Kawasaki
Truemors supports the democratization of the internet, and encourages anyone to publish their thoughts and ideas; from true to a rumor. “99% of the blogpshere hated Truemors, they say it was a bad idea that was poorly implemented”. Guy has a Facebook app that will be coming soon. Most people are submitting their Truemors via the web form. Why did Guy do this? Asked someone from the audience. He built this company for under $13,000. Guy would like to manage this site as on going basis. The monthly cost is $150 bucks a month. He’s not broken even, he’s attracting eyeballs. Words of wisdom: Don’t bring to a VC a company that has no audience or no break even (from a few large clients). Bring a company that either has many eyeballs, or high margin companies.

My Question to Guy: If Truemors was not branded with Guy’s name, would it be succesful? His answer “no”. An unequal playing field is part of the world, and he used every advantage he could. Every enterpreneur should be using all the resources available to them.

Blabberize by Mo Kakwan, CEO/Founder
Blabberize, a comedy site, is founded by Mo, who starts out with a personal anecdote. It let’s users select a picture, add text and make the site talk. A fun novelty site, it has opportunity to be a widget play for social networking sites. Mo is very entertaining, and held the audience, but ran out of time to complete his demo. I can see why this website takes on his persona. These are embeddable and they are working on a Facebook application. What’s a popular blabber? Parents and Grandparents want to make their young kids on the homepage.

JuggleMyStuff - Andy Sells, CEO/Founder
JuggleMyStuff is a project management tool, it allows users to plan, share, collaborate and manage. This robust project management tool appears to rival tools like MS projectpath. It’s a bit more complex than 37 Signals version. The demo was cut short due to technical issues (getting on the web). It’s always important to bring a slide deck to a presentation and never rely on the internet as the only source of info. Headed into Facebook as a developer. There’s a social networking aspect, that let’s users find out who voted what and where. Says he gets more women than men to use his site. Also building a widget for facebook.

Rateitall - Lawrence Coburn, CEO/Founder
RateItAll allows anyone to rate any type of product, service, or idea. Lawerence discusses that the top problems with ratings sites is that users have to go to the rating sites to learn about it. There’s a widget that can be embedded in a blog, or website, smooth flash experience. Has over 1 million visits last month. Richard over at Read Write Web says this is the first fully re-write and fully edited review widget. Be sure to read the Web Strategies on Widgets. His goal is to get nearly all ratings happening on other websites using the widget is his goal.

AdPerk by Barry Soicher
AdPerk is aiming to fix the broken TV advertising model. It’s a ‘token’ based advertising model that let’s users opt-in to watch advertisements and earn points for products or services. This is primarily focused on the magazine industry, where users can get discounts. This is a ad play, this can be embedded on a magazine’s website. “Watch and be rewarded with free issues”. Users are redirected to the AdPerk site and then back to the magazine site.

I also ran into Phillip Bensaid who’s with Crush3r.com, they just got reviewed by Webware. I’ve worked with Phillip on some projects while he was at frog design, he’s one of the most talented user experience folks that I’ve come across.
