Not sure what web analytics is good for? It’s intelligence to refine your web strategy. There’s quite a few people discussing how to use these techniques, from the industry leaders on my show, to this resource, we’re still trying to figure out the best processes. There’s quite a bit of discussion about this, here’s a few resources that I think are great:

  • Compare Vendor vs Vendor in Ultimate Web Analytics Comparison Resourcesthe
  • Here’s a list of over 130+ Web Analytics vendors, it’s quite a few

Like any other tool (a screwdriver, hammer, chisel) it depends on what end result you're after. Right?

Rather than leaving people to fret over this solution over that... I'd strongly recommend people start with some of the easy and free ones (Google Analytics). And, then begin developing a sense of what MORE they need (if anything).

I've used more analytics packages over the years than word processors. Some are more complex to set up and maintain than the value they provide. Others are super simple and yield amazing insights into performance and diagnostics I couldn't imaging operating online without them.

As for processes... "Just Do It" comes to mind.

I was the principal analyst and author, and conducted thorough evaluations of thirteen vendor solutions. In addition to the evaluations, there is lots of great "how to" for developing a business case for analytics, as well as how to best develop organizational requirements and go through the vendor selection process. • I've been looking at this topic but in the context of how nonprofits can use metrics and analytics. Most nonprofits don't have a lot of resources -- so google analytics is a great choice.

I have a few case studies from the nonprofit sector and some musings on how metrics for social media and blogs.
