Empowering Candidates during the Hiring Process

Categories: Social MediaPosted on February 2nd, 2007

Do you remember that really crappy career job that you never would have accepted if you knew what you were in for?

We’re all familiar with LinkedIn social business networking and SimplyHired as tools that help people connect around job and career growth. However there’s not been a strong service out there that helps potential candidates and future employers to share the experience of a work environment by using Social Media

Tracey from Career Tours and I have been exchanging emails regarding a website and service she’s involved with. This is an interesting blend of using social media to improve the recruiting and hiring process for both companies and candidates. This happy camp video gives an overview of the service.

Why should the only exposure for someone you’ll be spending more time with than your family be limited to a series of short interviews in a formal and unnatural environment? This site uses a variety of tools such as ratings, forums, and even online videos so candiates can get a better feel about the company before joining.

There’s a ton of hiring and career tools out there to FIND jobs, but there’s no great service that let’s a candidate learn about the authentic company culture from previous and current employees
.

As I understand it, CareerTours is unique as there’s also a way for a group of candiates to tour and meet folks from the company before even starting. Interesting concept, although I would expect online ratings from current and previous employees to be more accurate in determining what a real experience would be like.

I’m looking for a tool out there that will let employees (and maybe ex-employees) be able to authentically rate companies they’ve worked at, senior leadership, the cafeteria and the overall experience. That’s Cluetrain right? Power to the employees, candidates and little guys.

Lemme know if you’ve seen or are building such a tool.

  • I recently came across this site which allows people to rate their jobs with topics like Co-Worker Competence and Work Environment: http://www.jobvent.com/

I am actually working with a client that has a very large recruiting department. We are working with them to create a 'workbench' environment for their recruiters that essentially looks at their top competitors and what the hiring 'buzz' is around those companies as well as what the buzz is around their own hiring practices/perks/market status and why employees like or don't like working for them. For example, if they are trying to hire from a competitor they will essentially know some of the hot topics to hit during the interview process.

I don't see any 'employee' or 'previous employee' ratings about any of the companies there.

    Is that a feature?
  • Check out Jobster.com, enjoy.
