Obama makes Announcement via YouTube

Obama has made a pretty important announcement by using Social Media. I enjoyed this comment: “Change happens at the grassroots”. It’s unclear what he plans are, but it looks like he’s doing an exploratory program. You can view all of Obama’s videos on YouTube on his YouTube profile page.

With YouTube and many other websites, there’s already a community formed, users can subscribe, leave comments, and ‘interact’. The conversation goes both two ways. Speaking of conversations, there’s quite a few other discussions happening at memorandum, the conversation tracker for political blogs.

More politicians are using Social Media to get their word out, I’m waiting to see how the other political party will respond using the web.

Update: I’ve learned that Obama used a few other service to create and distribute his message, YouTube is just one of the mediums.

Hmmmm…wouldn’t these messages still be somewhat crafted?

    Very crafted, in fact scripted.

    I wouldn’t suspect less.

It looks like he used Brightcove on his campaign site, but pushed the announcement to YouTube in order to gain access to the larger community . . . for free.

I would like it if a politician would just be honest one day;-) I would love to hear them talk like regular people…and to actually act on the feedback that they’re given by the people that pay their salaries.

Ed, yes you are correct…Brightcove. I published this video before that announcement came out.

Kudos to Obama, and I’m crossing my fingers that this is the beginning of something bigger.

Yes, the messages are crafted. All public messages are, at least to some extent. Do you really want someone in a position of “authority” opening their mouths and just seeing what falls out? Even over beers with industry contacts, you gravitate to the people not only come across as friendly and real, but who also know what they’re talking about.

Obama’s speech linked above is clearly practiced and prepared, but the great thing is that it doesn’t have the vibe of fake and polished. BIG difference.
