Add Shared Items to Side Nav

Categories: Web ToolsPosted on January 13th, 2007

I hope Robert sees this, we were discussing wanting to do this.

I started sharing my items from my Google Reader, which is a form of a non-verbal gesture. Basically, if you like what I write, then you’ll likely like what I read.

I noticed on Google Reader link on side nav there’s an option to “Put a clip on your site” so you can then share up to 10 of your recently share items. I tweaked the UI so it would fit within my template and added it to the bottom of my right side nav on my blog (if you’re reading this in a feedreader, please go to my site to see)

If you’ve already got style sheets in your blog, you may want to disable the styles in the popup so it will match the rest of your site.

Finally, I also added a link to the Gesture Feed below my profile.

Update: This means you can subscribe to my feed via your feedreader (you don’t need my OPML now), as you’ll only see links that I find relevant. It’s the Jeremiah filter. RSS is everywhere.

What could be more insightful than seeing what your favorite bloggers are reading?
  • Brian, Yeah you can't import. I've the same challenge.

Please note that Google Reader is FAR superior as a feedreader than IG.

It's not slow, once you learn the shortcuts

Space bar, and Shift + S.

Set it up in folders and it can actually even save you time.

On the "Color Scheme" drop down, please select "none"
  • How did you come around disabling the built-in Google styles? That was my main problem with adding it to the sidebar on my current template.
  • This feature seems really cool. I have been using google's personalized home page to watch my favorite blogs, but it appears the google reader has no way to import those feeds from my personalized home page, which seems kind of lame unless I am missing something.

Google Reader is new to me, I think the UI could use some help and it seems a little slow. This share feature seems cool enough, and you can even subscribe to someones shared link list, which is pretty powerful.
