It's just too intrusive and I'm easily distracted. I'm in VA so I am hundreds of miles away from all my collegues, but I keep in touch by answering my emails every hour. The closest I come to IM is having Skype open and allowing the occassional IM to come through. I got nothing done when I used to have IM open, but much more now. But, it's not recommended for people who are isolated from their co-workers 1500 miles away. For people like that (not naming any names), IM is an invaluable and almost necessary form of communication.
