Take the Two Week Challenge: Kill Instant Messaging
Categories: RuminationsPosted on December 8th, 2006Serious, try it for two to three weeks, you’ll be surprised at how much you can get done. I learned this from Jeremy Zawodny, Damon Billian, and Mike Arrington. I’ll likely return to IM later…

That’s all well and good for someone who’s just jumped into a new start-up environment and doesn’t want to be distracted by their friends all day. But, it’s not recommended for people who are isolated from their co-workers 1500 miles away. For people like that (not naming any names), IM is an invaluable and almost necessary form of communication.

You probably remember that I was never reachable by IM. It’s just too intrusive and I’m easily distracted.
I’m in VA so I am hundreds of miles away from all my collegues, but I keep in touch by answering my emails every hour. The closest I come to IM is having Skype open and allowing the occassional IM to come through. I got nothing done when I used to have IM open, but much more now.

Andy, yes, you’re right, if it’s FOR work, and that’s the primary way to talk, it makes sense.
