Great Social Media Primer, but missing one key thing…

Categories: Social Media, Web TheoryPosted on November 22nd, 2006

Glenn Fannick a product manager at Factiva, has a great find for those that are not initiated in what is social media. This PDF (which I printed out) from Spannerworks gives examples of the different types of social media tools are out there, and how they work. If you don’t know what Social Media is, read this PDF.

Unfortunatly, this document does a horrible job of defining WHAT is social media. Some say that Social Media is: The online tools and messages that are shared between people.

Wikipedia says it a bit different: “Social media describes the online tools and platforms that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other. ”

Update: Dennis left a comment on this very post linking to a presentation he created which answers one of the “hows”. When I talk about Social media to people, there are several different converastions that happen, often along an evolutionary path. First is “What”, second is “Why”, often third (if we get that far) is “How”. Dennis is an IT consultant, we went on a journey earlier this year to answer how social media impacts IT departments (heh, again notice my corporate focus).  Also see the About page on the Social Media Primer

The document was NOT horrible, it was great, in fact I printed it out and gave it to my manager.

The document did not define social media. it simply listed types of social media. Once you update it, it will be pretty good.

Also, check out some of my more recent posts, or click on the "Social Media" tab, there are some other mediums to add to the fold that are appearing, perhaps we could collaborate.

Again, I can't express how helpful the document was, thank you for doing this.
  • Thanks for the link - interested in your comments about improving the definition we gave. Was it horrible because it was too long or that it was wrong?

We're always looking at improving the book - and our thinking - so will bear your feedback in mind.

Thanks again for the link - very kind.
  • Nice Social Media definition...it's possible to shorten it even further: (I'm trying to boil down the concept to the essence)

"SOCIAL NETWORKING is the use of processes and technologies to support the discovery, formation, and maintenance of relationships."

"SOCIAL MEDIA are collections of data and information that are developed collaboratively and/or shared interactively among people."

It's possible even to trade 'information' with the term 'experiences'.
  • FWIW, Jeremiah, here are definitions I used in a recent presentation (http://www.ddmcd.com/member_services.html):

SOCIAL NETWORKING is the use of special processes and technologies to support the discovery, formation, and maintenance of personal and professional relationships.
SOCIAL MEDIA are collections of data and information that are developed collaboratively and/or shared interactively among individuals and groups.
