Overcoming Bloggers Block, Four tips to act on.

Categories: Social Media, Word of MouthPosted on November 16th, 2006

Just got off the phone this morning on my commute with Mario, he’s has bloggers block and is having difficulty publishing. Being a big fan of Guy Kawasaki, his writing style is very close to him, and quite difficult to emulate. Here’s my advice to him:

  • It’s a coffee shop not a podium: Blogging is more like casual conversation between friends over drinks.
  • Shish-Kabob not Steak: Keep it small, simple and easy to digest. Leave the essay’s for work or college, it’s about making it easy to scan.
  • Synthesize: Whenever you’re surfing the web, keep track of those URLs, you can easily create a web post by using the links into a pattern and adding your observations on top.
  • Add value: Whatever you do, always add some value, don’t just repeat what others are doing to gain traffic or SEO benefits. I keep track of those that are ‘cheating’ the blogosphere and I make it a point NOT to visit their site.

Hope that helps buddy!

  • Nice tips. I'm working on getting better at the Synthesize part to force myself to get better at linking out.

Anyway, the link to Mario seems to be broken.
  • As true as this is, some bloggers use a really long post style, and it is unusual enough to gain attention.

Jory at BlogHer does this, as you can see in her latest post here: http://blogher.org/node/12589

She has been known to go on for pages. Now, note that she is blogging more as social commentary than as a bona fide business blogger, but her style is still attractive because it is a respite from the one paragraph blog entry.
  • You were quick with this post, J. Beat me to it: http://mariosundar.wordpress.com/2006/11/17/are....

Thanks for the tips, bro. I'm now planning on jumping to the shish-kebab side. Will try my hand at it.
