Google Launches ‘Webmaster’ Resource –I can’t stand that title
I’m going to be a bit cranky, here, I don’t mind being called a web hippie, an evil liar, a neutral marketer, or a neo marketer, but PLEASE don’t call me a WebMaster. It’s like we’ve gone back to 1997, and uploaded ‘under construction’ rotating gifs and black star backgrounds. The modern day web manager is purposeful and is supposed to make decisions based upon sound understanding of user experience research, understanding business needs, and understanding of technology (see the three elements of a web strategist)
Google just launched a WebMaster resource, that appears to have some useful resources that I’ve discussed or used before. Neat tools include site verification, site map uploader, central blog, forums, and ability to submit content. I’m doing the site verification process as we speak.

I’m the one that’s supposed to be grouchy. Actually, that is one title I came to loathe around 1996. My bio on one of the pseudo Internet companies I was involved with during that time even said not to ever call me a “webmaster”. Since then I’ve gotten over my distaste of the word and I don’t really mind it in some cases. I would still never use Webmaster as a professional title, but when it’s used as an adjective to describe my role within an organization, especially a smaller company, I don’t mind. I guess it’s just all due to the wide spread adoption of the word by the general public. For instance, I hated the word “blog” when it first started being used, but now I don’t mind it. I still hate the term “Web 2.0″ though.
Blog is a nasty word –it’s the sound in comics when someone throws up.
Web 2.0 isn’t the greatest term but as David and I have been discussing in his comments, “Social Media” doesn’t cover it all. (like Ajax and RIA)

[…] David doesn’t like the term Web 2.0, nor does Andy (read comments) so what should we call it? […]
