Social Media tools yield Social Network
Categories: Feedback, Search Strategy, Social MediaPosted on August 10th, 2006I’d say one of the greatest things about writing a blog is that I get contacted via email from folks I don’t know because of my blog. I’ve noticed this has started to increase more rapidly in the past months, here’s a breakdown of what I usually get:
- Requests to demo or blog about a product or product release.
- Requests to interview for jobs.
- Request from recruiter to find someone who may want a job.
- Request to connect to Social Sites (I only accept LinkedIn requests, and only if I know you)
- Sometimes request to speak.
- Specific questions about “How to”. Most often is how to convince management on the concept of having online conversations with customers is a good thing (blogs).
- Added to relevant mailing lists (like Mediapost and other internet publications).
- Added to irrelevant mailing lists (these get junked).
- Spam: (Which goes into spam folder).
- Emails or IMs from friends who spot my multiple typos, sorry, It’s 430am right now, and I have limited time, I’ll do my best, I’ll try harder.
- Edit: Folks add me as friends in Flickr stream because of your blog, this is interesting as Brian Oberkirch and I have discussed how flickr is a great door opener, as people get to know the human side of us, oh don’t forget my videos page too. (Thanks Tom Raferty for the thought, see his comment below)
These are all great (even the spam) because it means this tool is working as designed and intended, even though only I don’t have thousands subscribed. I certainly welcome your emails if you’ve any questions –I’ll do my best to respond.

[...] As silly as he thinks it, I don’t. I write about things that are happening to me in my life and in my career. At the time, I was really exploring corporate and business blogging, as that’s what I was doing at my job (and now folks ask me for advice on how to do it). [...]
