Jeremiah Owyang discusses how web tools and social media enable companies to connect with customers

Should CEOs use Email?

Recently had an interesting conversation around CEO blogging. We discussed how Sun’s CEO is a blogger, here’s how the dialogue went:

Jeremiah: “It’s interesting that John Schwartz the CEO of Sun is one of the few corporate CEO bloggers”

Gent: “I doubt he writes it”

Jeremiah: “I’m pretty sure he does –and it’s part of the culture he promotes”

Gent: “Is that what he should be doing? Shouldn’t a CEO be doing other things?”

Jeremiah: “John says his job is primarily to be a Communicator, he can easily communicate to all employees and customers and analysts and partners in 5-10 minutes.”

Gent: “…”

I think I got through to him, If he would have had a retort, I would have ask “Should CEOs email?”–undoubtly, it takes a CEO more time to respond to emails and reply to each and every one, perhaps one way to reduce a busy person’s time is to think of business blogging is an email that ‘CCs’ the world.

I tip my hat to you John Schwartz, the first and only CEO blogger at a major corporation –Now to dig Sun out of the hole that your role came with…best of luck.
